In a few days, three of us from GMA are headed to Austin, Texas for Exponent Philanthropy’s annual conference, which GMA is always proud to sponsor. We value this immersive experience as a chance to connect and reconnect with colleagues, learn and reflect on strong philanthropy, and draw inspiration from both big ideas and practical tools.
This year’s setting in Austin—a city celebrated for its creativity, food, and natural beauty—feels particularly fitting for our work in philanthropy.
Learn, connect, and imagine
Austin’s rich history and culture invite us to think beyond the traditional bounds of philanthropy. This city is a testament to what happens when creative energy and local strengths are nurtured and allowed to flourish. The same principles ring true in grantmaking: when we listen closely, support inherent strengths, and collaborate with intention, we create opportunities for communities to thrive.
In modern-day Austin, we see powerful reminders of the values and aspirations that drive strong philanthropy. In that setting, in conversation with remarkable community leaders and peers, we’ll imagine new approaches, deep connections, and bright possibilities.
Carry forward Austin’s spirit in your philanthropy
As fans of metaphor, we thought a little on the connection between Austin and philanthropy. Five iconic images from Austin, Texas grabbed our attention. So, we’re bringing Texas-made, colorful lapel pins bearing these images to the Exponent Philanthropy conference. If you’ll be there too, stop by GMA’s exhibit table to choose a few pins as fun souvenirs – or future inspiration.
1. Deep Roots, Long-term Growth
Like Texas’ mighty live oak trees, strong communities are built on deep roots of trust and collaboration. By nurturing relationships and investing in long-term growth, we honor the legacy of past generations and support today’s leaders in flourishing.
2. Creativity and Harmony
Austin’s music scene embodies collaboration and creativity, bringing diverse voices together to create something greater than the sum of its parts. In philanthropy, harmony begins with listening closely to communities and trusting in their shared vision for change.
3. Collaboration
Each evening, Austin’s free-tailed bat colony emerges from the Congress Avenue bridge in search of nourishment, creating a stunning display. Philanthropy too thrives on collaboration and trust. With collective efforts, we can rise higher and achieve more for the communities we serve.
4. Local Strengths
Texas wildflowers thrive in harmony, each enhancing the landscape’s beauty and supporting its ecosystem. Like these blooms, philanthropy grows stronger when we nurture local strengths, embrace diversity, and build inclusive communities.
5. Economic Opportunities
Austin’s food trucks symbolize the city’s entrepreneurial drive, creative spirit, and love of good food and friendship. In philanthropy, they remind us of the power of innovation and economic mobility to create opportunities and connect communities.
